In a new series we're starting on the blog we've asked several members of our chapter to identify times in their lives they've felt that someone has demonstrated Kappa Delta's mission of building confidence and inspiring action in young women in their life. With a wide array of answers and experiences, our take away from this series is how profoundly this sisterhood has changed its members' lives for the better. So without further ado, we'll let Taylor share a little bit of how confidence has changed her:

I believe an important aspect of not only building your confidence but the confidence of others, is discovering the impact that you have. Many believe that their words and actions have a minuscule effect on how they feel, but our words can really change a lot. Never underestimate the power of your words, in your own life and others.
I know that for me, personally, it took the words of others and a shift in my self-thought to gain the confidence that I have today. If it weren’t for the women in Kappa Delta telling me that I am capable of accomplishing my goals and reassuring me that I am doing great things, I would not be where I am. When deciding whether to apply for my council position, the texts I received from the women in my pledge class were really what pushed me to do it. At the time, I was not sure that I could be successful in such a large role. These texts really had an impact on me and how I viewed my accomplishments. I believe it is important for us to realize that a simple text may not seem worth the time, but that could create such a large change for someone.
Always take the time to build others up and recognize their accomplishments because you never know what someone is going through. A simple “thank you” to show appreciation for what someone has done can prove to them that they are seen and should be confident in what they’re doing. On the other hand, positive self-talk can be extremely vital to your confidence. You have to believe in the things that you are capable of doing and continue to push yourself in a positive manner. It is extremely easy to constantly remind yourself of your failures, but imagine if you reminded yourself of everything that you have accomplished. I know something that really works for me is writing down everything that I feel I have done well; this can be grades, social situations that you handled well, cleaning your room, etc.

Anything that you feel affects your life in a positive way is worth being proud of. Self-talk seems like something not really worth taking the time to change and it may seem dumb, but I promise you are important enough to deserve that positivity and happiness.
You are amazing and worthy of self-love, let your words build your confidence. You deserve it, it is not selfish to love yourself. Being intentional with your words and actions will bring you more confidence than you know. Helping others always make us feel better and it’s important to share that love with ourselves too. We are all amazing and strong women who deserve to be confident in who we are and the things that we do. I encourage you, moving forward, to let your words construct a beautiful and hopeful world around you. Negativity will make you believe something that you are not. You are worthy of love, support, and a sisterhood that adores you for you.
AOT,
Taylor
