This is weird right? I'm not going to sugarcoat it or tell you happy platitudes about how amazing your first year as college students is going to be despite the challenges. What was supposed to be your first year of BSC traditions like move-in day, E-fest, and Homecoming looks very different. And for the seniors of our chapter, we’re missing out on a semester full of lasts as well. We are now beginning to understand the heartbreak you all went through missing out on your last three months of high school. If you’re feeling anxious about living at BSC in the fall in the middle of pandemic know that you aren’t alone.

So why then in the middle of all of this chaos would you worry about greek life or recruitment? It’s a question our own members have asked themselves and one I’m sure you’ve asked yourself as virtual recruitment approaches.

Have you ever known the answer to a question but felt that tingly feeling of fear in the back of your head that tells you to keep your hand down? Have you ever wanted to try out a new hobby but been too embarrassed to follow through because you were afraid of what your friends might think? Have you ever let that little voice tell you that your outfit is too outside the norm or that your thoughts and opinions are best kept to yourself? Have you ever felt that you don’t belong in a group?

I have. So many members of our chapter have. That little voice, the piece of ourselves that isn’t confident enough to trust that we know ourselves and our minds, never truly goes away. Yet every single time that little voice starts to creep in again, whether its about school or your personal life, Kappa Delta provides 50 women who see you for more than what you could ever expect of yourself. It provides a community of women who have felt the same and have pushed past it to grow and learn from their insecurities and mistakes.

Ask any of our members, old or new, and they will tell you the same. Your freshman year is a crazy time full of new friends, classes, and a new period of adjustment. But time and time again my sisters have given advice, love, or maybe just a good laughing session at my worst moments. They’ve seen me through papers I should have worked harder on, failed interviews for leadership positions, and rough days at work. They’re always there with a computer charger, a pint of ice cream from the c-store, or maybe just a space to be quiet or vent.

Kappa Delta provides that little push, the first time you raise your hand in a class discussion or maybe the first time you plan an event. They provide cheerleaders along the sides of your sporting events and cheerleaders alongside you in the classroom. More than anything Kappa Delta gives you roommates, best friends, and mentors who want nothing more than to see you succeed.

So if you’re wondering why you should go greek we offer you this: we promise to be there for you no matter what. This past year has been incredibly difficult for you all and this fall seems like such a different world from the one we had back in March. And yet despite all that worry and anxiety, we have found excitement in a shifting of what was once “normal”. Where we once worked hard to preserve the traditions we have built over the past 80 years we look forward to building new ones with all of you!

AOT,

McLean and Alpha Upsilon
