Hey, y’all! My name is Kennedy Dickens, and I am a rising sophomore. I am from Brentwood, Tennessee! I am also a part of the volleyball team at Birmingham-Southern. One of my biggest takeaways from freshman year has to be that I have become more confident in who I am not only as a person, but an athlete, student, and friend! I owe a lot of my growth to Kappa Delta. I knew that I wanted to be a Kappa Delta because I knew the women of the chapter would help me grow into the kind of person I want to be.

Before joining Kappa Delta, I would not have seen myself as an overly confident person. I always seemed to be most confident when it came to sports, but when it came to other things I was usually shier and more reserved in newer situations. In the short 7 or so months of being a Kappa Delta, I can say that the confidence my sisters give me has led me to do things I never would have imagined doing. I used to not do anything outside of my comfort zone, but now I try to step out of my little bubble more.

My confidence has soared thanks to my sisters. Because our chapter is so close, I felt important and seen immediately. Whenever I saw my sisters in the stands at volleyball games cheering for me, I knew I had made the right choice for me. It’s the small things that made me feel loved. Everyone wants to see you succeed in whatever it is that you’re doing, and I felt this when I was told that my pledge class had to dance in front of the school for Mr. Hilltopper. I was terrified. I cannot dance, and I definitely was very nervous about being on stage as the center of attention. I have never really been one to want unnecessary attention, especially with something like dancing. But we practiced for weeks, and I soon realized that this was something I looked forward to during my day. I couldn’t wait to go to practice and just let loose with my pledge class. This may seem small, but it was way out of my comfort zone. Having everyone in the crowd cheering for us and making us feel special made the embarrassment and nerves go away. By performing our 3-minute dance, I learned that I had people that would support me in anything I wanted to do.

All of my sisters give me confidence, but my pledge class has most definitely had a huge role in my growth! PC’19 is a very diverse group of girls; we are made up of almost every women’s sport at BSC and have some talented artists, writers, photographers, and just amazing people all brought together through Kappa Delta. I look up to each and every one of these ladies because of how passionate they are about what they do. They give me so much confidence whether it be in my sport or just one of my classes. I know I can always go to any one of them for advice or love, and I will do the same for them. It is so inspiring to watch so many different girls come together and bond so quickly!

Kappa Delta has also let me grow through my appointed officer position. I am the intramural chair, which I was very surprised, but excited when I received this spot. Through this, I have had to communicate with large groups of people to organize games and get people to participate. It may not seem like a huge leadership role to some, but through it, I have developed so much more confidence! I am super fortunate that we are so involved and determined when it comes to intramural sports.

I am so thankful that I found a group of people that will constantly lift me up and push me to be my very best. Building confidence takes time, and I will always try to find ways to be more confident. It does not happen overnight, but now I feel like I am always taking a step towards growth and reaching my goals because I know my sisters are confident in me. Knowing someone has confidence in me just encourages me to strive for more and more!

AOT,

Kennedy
