It’s funny how you plan out your whole college career, and then that plan never seems to go the way you imagined. This plan changes because of the people you meet and the choices you make. When I joined KD as a freshman, I thought of it as something else to do or put on my resume. However, this chapter of Kappa Delta is not just a sorority that you join “just because.” The people in this chapter will push you to be your very best and do the best that you can.
I started my BSC experience as a student-athlete. I thought that this was going to be my biggest accomplishment: the survival of being a college athlete. However, I learned that this is not what was best for me. I felt like there was something bigger for me to be doing. My sisters helped me get through the transition of doing something that I have done for as long as I’ve known to find something new.
My personality has always been that “super shy before you get to know me” type. I didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes coming into this chapter and I didn’t want to intrude on anyone’s job. It wasn’t until I got my first appointed officer position as Alumni Chair that I felt like I had a true place and purpose in this chapter. Katie, the head of my chain of command, always made sure that I was doing okay in my position and was there to encourage me every step of the way. I even planned a successful Alumni Tea and fostered new connections with our chapter to alumni from the Birmingham area!
Living in the Kappa Delta house has become one of my favorite memories of the KD experience. If you are ever given the opportunity to do this, I would take it. I shared so many laughs, tears, Bachelor nights, dinners, and memories that I will always cherish. Something else that I also experienced in that house was the drive to become an even bigger part of this chapter. Three people that I have to thank for pushing to break down my walls are McLean, Katie, and Manon. These three girls have inspired me to become the very best version of myself because that is what they do. They give so much to this chapter, and I have never been so influenced by passion before I joined this chapter.

When I heard “you should apply for council,” I thought that that might be for me. I believe it is human nature to want success, but the drive to succeed has to come from somewhere. The girls in this chapter want to see each other succeed, so when you are pushed because someone believes in you it is hard not to strive for the best. I have loved my job on council, and it has become one of the most rewarding experiences. I have not only grown personally, but I have grown in my connections with CAB, other members of council, Girl Scouts, and the Exchange Club. Working with the Exchange Club and the Girl Scouts is so amazing and I hope to continue these connections even after my time on council has ended. These memories and people were brought to me because I was inspired to become something bigger than I could’ve ever imagined.
Remember how I mentioned that your college career never goes as you planned it? My original plan has obviously been thrown out the door, and a new one is being re-written every day. Alpha Upsilon has brought me more than just a big group of friends. It has inspired me to do my best and reach for the stars. I have learned through this chapter that you can never succeed if you do not try first. I am so very thankful for this chapter, and can not wait for not just two more years in it, but for a lifetime of those laughs, tears, Bachelor nights, dinners, and memories.
If you type in Google “inspiring action definition,” you get the obvious definition of action one takes when they feel inspired to it. The next sentence of the Google definition is what I have felt through Kappa Delta: “This type of action is almost always accompanied by a rush of energy, and feelings of excitement, enthusiasm and joy.”

Olivia
