One thing we're missing almost as much as our sisters is the Birmingham restaurant scene. Birmingham has so many cool restaurants and so many different types of food we asked two local sisters to help give us some recommendations for when we're finally all back together!
Hey everyone! My name is Alexandra and I'm also from Homewood. I love exploring new restaurants with my sisters and introducing them to some of my favorites since I've lived in Birmingham my whole life. Here's just a few suggestions from me!
Where is your favorite place to go to since you came to BSC?
Since coming to college, I have tried a bunch of new places. One of my favorite places is Brick and Tin. There are two locations, one downtown and one in Mountain Brook. I love going to the one in Mountain Brook to grab lunch with friends. Everything on the menu is delicious but I order a cup of butternut soup with a kale melt!
What is your favorite ethnic food restaurant?
Jensei is my favorite sushi place in Birmingham. I have been going here for years. Its located in the heart of Downtown Homewood, right by my house. It’s so fun to go and try new sushi rolls with friends. Also, the River Rock Kobe is one of my new favorite items, it’s do it yourself Kobe flank steak.

Wow, I can’t say enough great things about Chez Fonfon!! They have the most amazing burger. If you are looking for the best burger in Birmingham, this is the place to go!! Seriously you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Save room for dessert to try their award-winning coconut cake- you won't regret it!
Best place to go out to eat with your parents or people coming into town?
El Barrio is a fun upbeat vibe. It has the yummiest Mexican in all of Birmingham! I like going because it has something for everyone. It’s a fun environment with locally sourced food. The inside of the restaurant has a bunch of Mexican street art that makes it super unique looking. My favorite thing on the menu is the fish tacos and the elote!!
Best dessert in BHAM?
It is hard for a lover of sweets to choose just one place for dessert! I would say that one of my go tos is Pastry Art. Pastry Art has these cake bites that will make your mouth water and they're super great to get by the dozen to share with your friends!
Dissaffliated Sister
Hi guys I was the house manager for KD this past year and loved introducing all of my roommates to the incredible restaurants we have in Birmingham!
Where is your favorite place to go to since you came to BSC?
As a student sometimes you just need a quick meal of whatever you can get! My go-to and favorite easy place is Milos! Although this is a fast food place, you can only find it in Alabama! There is a Milos conveniently a few miles from BSC’s Campus! My guilty pleasure is a #4 which is a double cheeseburger combo with the signature Milos sauce and grilled onions (Have to be grilled) on the burger with their perfect crinkle-cut fries and I always add their special powdered fry topping. It is also pretty much illegal to wash this down with anything other than the famous Milo’s sweet tea so that is what I get too.
What is your favorite ethnic food restaurant?
My favorite Thai food place is Surin West located in Five Points South. One of my earliest memories is actually at this Surin West with my entire extended family so you can say I’ve been eating here awhile! An appetizer is never a bad thing to do and my personal favorite is the Crab Angels or the Dim Sum. Depending on my mood I may want sushi or a noodle bowl! Their sushi is made fresh and is some of the best in Birmingham. My favorite roll is their super crunch roll which I usually would pair with a spicy coconut shrimp soup. If I am not into sushi that day I will probably opt for their Chicken Noodle bowl! This is absolutely not traditional chicken noodle soup. This bowl is packed with chicken and rice noodles drenched in a peanut butter sauce and has a kick of lemon pepper curry. Red Bean ice cream is a perfect sweet treat to tie up lunch or dinner!

I’ve lived in Birmingham my whole life and so one of my favorite things is taking my friends to the best food places in Birmingham! My top place in Birmingham is conveniently just a mile or two away from BSC and I have been eating here since I was a young girl! Nikis West is a cafeteria-style meat and three. I guarantee you that you will not be treated better or eat anything more home-cooked than when you sit down in one of their booths. I do not eat here often but when I do, I go all in. It is one of the most highly rated places in Birmingham and is always packed. I tend to get their baked lemon pepper catfish, with creamed corn, collard greens, and mashed potatoes with gravy - You also cannot forget your yeast roll! Pie is a popular menu favorite, of course, and my personal favorite is their coconut cream pie!
Best place to go out to eat with your parents or people coming into town?
Jack Brown’s is a student body favorite which you can find in the Lakeview area! I have been enjoying this funky burger joint since high school! Jack Browns is probably one of the grooviest places in the Birmingham Metro area. The entire place is actually pretty small but they sure do take advantage of the room they do have. The walls are plastered with anything and everything you could even imagine. I'm sure there are a dozen new crazy cool decorations thrown up on the wall every time I dine in there! The whole vibe of the restaurant is upbeat and fun. The people, the music, the dangly lights, and of course the food makes eating here an experience. In the warmer months, there is a nice outdoor patio with lots of room to bring every one of your friends and even your puppy to come grab a burger. The Cobra Kai paired with sweet potato fries is my absolute go-to. The Cobra Kai is a regular burger topped with cream cheese, candied jalapenos, and pepper jelly. It definitely has a kick to it but the Jack Brown's sauce is perfect! Their fried Oreos are always a good idea too and I'm always happy to get one, or two, or even half a dozen to take home to my friends!
Best dessert in BHAM?
If anyone knows me, you know I love sugar. I am very non-discriminatory towards sweets and I typically love everything. Tostadas located in Downtown Homewood in SoHo. Tostadas sells a dessert that I crave almost several times a week. Tostadas is a Mexican restaurant and so their dessert is called a Cookie Dough burrito! This treat is a cookie dough wrapped in bread and fried and served with ice cream on top
