Hi guys! I'm Samantha Grembecki and not only am I able to be a part of KD, but I am also able to be a part of the Women’s Soccer team at BSC. Not many schools are able to give this type of experience and even though I absolutely love being a part of both of these organizations, it sometimes poses a time crunch! However, it is doable to completely balance everything (and totally worth doing). The biggest question I get asked is how I ~actually~ balance the two of them and school, so I have decided to walk you through a day of a Kappa Delta - student-athlete.
In the fall, Wednesdays and Thursdays were usually my busiest school days along with soccer and KD responsibilities. Wednesdays I had Cell and Molecular, Chem Skills, and Gender and Women’s Studies. I then would have practice at 5:00 for an hour and a half and then usually something with Kappa Delta at 8:00 which could be Stage, First or Second Degree, Initiation, Big-Little, or a Sisterhood Event it depended on where we were in the semester! Anything like that would last an hour or two on average. How does one deal with all of that and homework without having a meltdown? I am so glad you asked. It is not as hard as you think but you MUST be absolutely dedicated to time management.
1. I would sleep in right up until my 9:10 and walk over to my 9:30 class. If you are feeling really productive you could get up earlier and study a little and get breakfast.
2. After class, I would go straight to the caf and work on my computer until they opened up lunch for the day… Side note… I love doing my homework in the caf because I get to sit with my team and talk to the people who come in and out. It's usually kind of loud in there, but it does not bother me when doing my homework. If it bothers you then I would recommend sitting upstairs in Norton or heading over to the library for some peace and quiet. Socializing is also very important to keep your day more relaxed. In those two hours between class you can get a lot more work done then you think even if it is going through emails and organizing something.
3. Then I head off to my two classes! After that, I go back to the caf to get something small to eat before practice. After grabbing a bite, I set a timer for 20 or 30 minutes depending on how my mood is and take a break. I usually used this time to talk to my roommate and see how her day is too (shout out to Halle!)
4. After I will try to work on some more homework before practice or at least get everything set up to be ready when I get back from practice. You can even do something in your room at this time like clean dishes or change your sheets. Doing something small is better than doing nothing.
5. I head over to the locker room to get ready for practice. Being with your team is the time to let everything go. You are an athlete now and that’s it. Enjoy the field and take it all in. These are your last four seasons being there and you want to make the most of it!
6. After practice, I head straight to the caf. We usually go as a team and it is great bonding just winding down from practice together. After that, I head back to my dorm and then straight to the shower.
7. Homework time! Even though you've already had a pretty full day, it's easy to remember all the time you've had to decompress from class and now its time to focus on academics for a little bit.
8. Then its usually time to head down to the house for whatever event were having that day whether its recruitment practice or ritual! Again, leave behind the stress of school and enjoy your sisters and what you are doing because you only get four years with them too.
9. After you are done at the house go work on some more homework. It is about finding those small amounts of time to work on school because they add up. When it comes down to it, your education is the reason you are at BSC. While you can go greek and be an athlete, school comes first (and your sisters and teammates understand that).

There is more work that goes into keeping up with everything. First thing… HAVE A CALENDAR! I can not stress that enough. Organize everything you have to do in a calendar. I use the Outlook Calendar. You can also use a paper calendar too. There are so many options. Use it! Put in your class schedule, practice schedule, sorority schedule, and social life. You can't lose your mind or forget anything if you keep it all right there.
Also, keep that syllabus close. Keep track of those assignments and look ahead. Traveling is crazy so look at what is coming up so you do not feel like you are drowning. USE BUS TIME. I can not stress this enough. Use the hours on the bus to do school and work on Kappa Delta stuff.
Lastly, ask for help when you need it. Chances are one of your sisters who have taken the class and can help you or help you find someone who has. They are your people and are there to help you. Your team and coaches are too. You have to keep the grade point up to play and be a part of greek life. It is so doable to be everything you want to be at BSC and everyone there is going to support you through it all. You just have to make sure that you are doing your part also.
AOT,
Sam
